Joint update service for Four Thirds lenses

This page explains the Joint update service for Four Thirds lenses (including Micro Four Thirds lenses) for Panasonic camera body users, and provides a link to the page explains the same for Olympus camera body users, together with the Panasonic camera body’s firmware updates.

The following services are available for improvements on performance, operability, and compatibility in the digital interchangeable lens system camera and lens.

Update procedures depending on the combination of camera body and lens

Please note that a camera body is required in order to update any Four Thirds lenses (including Micro Four Thirds lenses), while camera body can be updated without lens.

There are 4 cases of firmware update procedures depending on the combination of camera body and lens.
(Hereafter, "Panasonic" represents Panasonic Corporation, "OLYMPUS" represents OLYMPUS IMAGING, CORP., and "SIGMA" represents SIGMA Corporation.)

Firmware update procedures for the Case 1 ,2 and 3

In advance to any lens firmware update, please make sure that your camera body firmware is latest. For the Case 2(OLYMPUS lens) and Case 3(SIGMA lens), DMC-L1 and L10 camera body is required to be Ver.2.1 or later, otherwise lens firmware can not be updated.

Overview of the total firmware update procedures include the following steps.

Step 1. Preparation of update program

  • 1-1. Check the current version of firmware of your camera and lens
  • 1-2. Download the file for update
  • 1-3. Extraction of the file
  • 1-4. Copy the firmware update program extracted into an SD memory card.

Step 2. Procedure for lens update

Step 3. Procedure for camera body update

 

STEP 1. Preparation of update program

1-1. Check the current version of firmware of your camera and lens

The procedures to check the firmware version of your camera body and lens, are explained in this section.
The following explanation is for DMC-GF1, DMC-GH1, DMC-G1, DMC-L10 and DMC-L1 (with the firmware Ver.2.0 or later). Please check the explanation for DMC-L1 here, if it is not updated from Ver.1.0 or 1.1.

Panasonic recommends the firmware update if the firmware version indicated is older than the version being offered. (The update is not required if it's the same.)


The firmware version display method

  1. Mount a lens onto the camera body.
  2. Set the camera’s power switch to ON.
  3. Press the MENU/SET button.
  4. Go to the SETUP menu and select the "Version DISP" (Fig.3), then press > button. (It is on the 4th page in GF1/GH1/G1, and on the 3rd page in L10/L1)

For DMC-L10(Ver.2.1 or above)/L1(Ver.2.1 or above)

When you attach a certain lens accessories such as teleconverter, the firmware version of it is displayed below the one for lens. (Fig.3)

In order to check the firmware version of it, please attach a Four Thirds lens on it, otherwise the firmware version of it is not be displayed.

Please note that this firmware version display for a lens accessory is only available on the camera body firmware Ver.2.1. or later, both for DMC-L1 and L10.Please make sure that your camera body firmware is latest, in advance to update any lens accessories.

   

For DMC-GF1/GH1/G1
Four Thirds lenses can be updated together with the Mount Adapter(DMW-MA1). Please note that any Four Thirds lens accessories such as Teleconverter can not be updated even attached on the Mount Adapter. (Lens Firmware Version Display is also not available.)

   
1-2. Download the file for update
Please download the file for firmware update in advance.
  1. Make a temporary folder on your PC for downloading each files,e.g. C:/Temp.
  2. Download and save the file in the folder you made.
  3. Check the file size first by selecting "properties" in the right click menu. (For Mac, by selecting "Information" in Finder)
  4. If the size is different from the one described in the download page, please download it again.

Lens and accessaries

  1. In advance to any lens firmware update, please make sure that your camera body firmware is latest. For any firmware updates on any other company's products, DMC-L1 and L10 camera body is required to be Ver.2.1 or later, otherwise the firmware can not be updated.
  2. Please note that a Four Thirds lens is required to be attached on a lens accessory, in order to update any lens accessory firmware, such as Tele Converter. Any lens accessories can not be updated without attaching a Four Thirds lens on it.
  3. Any Four Thirds lens accessories such as Tele Converter can not be updated on the Mount Adaptor(DMW-MA1) together with DMC-GF1/GH1/G1.
1-3. Extraction of the file
For Windows
  • Double click the downloaded files
    You may see following message after double click the downloaded files, please ignore it and just click Run and move to the next step.
    This screen is an example in case of L10V**.exe.
For Macintosh
  • Extract downloaded file
  • - It depend on your Macintosh setting about whether the file maybe automatically extracted or not.
  • - If your OS is older than Mac OS X 1.02, Please use Extract software, If your Macintosh OS is newer than, Mac OS X 1.03, double click the files.

1-4.Copy the extracted firmware update program (bin file) into an SD memory card.
Please do NOT put any downloaded exe file in the SD card as which would cause a malfunction.
Preparation of the SD Memory Card
10 MB or more must be free on the SD Memory Card and use an SD Memory Card which has already been formatted for the camera body.
Please refer your instruction book for more details. (Use Lumix camera body for formatting the SD Memory Card.)
When formatting the SD Memory Card, all data, including protected data, will be erased and can not be recovered. Please make sure to back up your important data so you don't loose it.

Insert your formatted SD Memory card to your SD slot of your PC.

Copy the firmware update program (bin file) extracted from the downloaded file in Step 1-3. into the SD memory card. Please do NOT put any downloaded exe file in the SD memory card, as which would cause a malfunction. If your PC does not have an SD slot, use an external USB SD Reader/Writer device.
Copy only the firmware update program (bin file) into the Root directory(*1) of the SD memory card as shown below.
(*1) Root directory = The first or top-most directory in the hierarchy.



This screen in the case of Windows XP, the screen may differ by the setting.

Files can be directly copied from the PC by using SD Memory Card reader/writer devices with the USB port.
Use the camera body for formatting the SD Memory Card in such cases.

When formatting the SD Memory Card, all data, including protected data, will be erased and can not be recovered. Please make sure not to lose your important data.
